Whole House Cleaning System

How the Whole-Home Cleaning Rotation Works

You do not need to clean your whole house every day, or even every week. This system turns everything that needs to be done into one reusable daily list and a balanced four-week rotation.

1

Build your cleaning plan

Enter each room or cleaning area in your home and add the tasks that need to be done.

DailyWeeklyEvery other weekMonthly

A realistic reminder

Try to keep your daily list to 10 tasks or fewer. If the daily list is enormous, it probably is not going to happen every day. Move anything that does not truly need daily attention to the weekly rotation.

2

Generate your rotation

After you add your rooms and tasks, the system automatically creates:

  • One reusable daily task list
  • A four-week cleaning rotation
  • A manageable list of jobs for each week

Daily tasks stay on the daily list. Weekly tasks appear each week, every-other-week tasks appear twice during the rotation, and monthly tasks appear once.

3

Make your lists reusable

Print your lists and protect them so you can mark them with a dry-erase or whiteboard marker and wipe them clean later.

  • A personal laminator
  • Clear adhesive shelf liner
  • Clear page protectors
  • Another wipe-clean covering you already have
4

Display only what you need

Post your daily list and the current week somewhere you will regularly see them. Keep the other weekly lists tucked behind the current list until it is time to rotate.

Clipboards work especially well because they are easy to hang, easy to write on, and make it simple to hide the weeks you are not currently using.

5

Use the system

Each task has one large completion box on the left and two small skip boxes on the right.

No guilt required

You get two guilt-free skips

The two small boxes are completely guilt-free. You have permission to miss any task twice.

A skip does not mean you failed. It simply means: when this task comes around again, give it a little more attention.

This system is not here to punish you or make you feel behind. It is here to remember things for you so you do not have to carry them around in your head.

Completing a task clears its skips

When you complete a task that had previously been skipped, check the large completion box. At the end of the day or week, wipe away the completion mark and that task's skip marks too.

Once the job is completed, it gets a clean slate.

Rotate and begin again

At the end of each week, wipe away completed-task marks, leave skip marks on jobs that still need attention, move the finished weekly list behind the others, and bring the next week to the front.

After Week 4, return to Week 1 and begin the rotation again.

Progress, not perfection

You do not have to complete every task for the system to work.

Do what you can. Use your skips without guilt. Let the rotation bring unfinished tasks back around later.
